Centennial Year Schedule of Events

Holy Family Church at 8th & Boulder will celebrate its Centennial of Dedication in 2014. There are a number of events that the Cathedral is hosting.

Here is an overview of the year:

  • April 7, 2013: 99th Anniversary of Holy Family’s Dedication Extraordinary Form Mass with Father William DeFine F.S.S.P.
  • September 22, 2013: Is there Sacred Architecture? with Professor Duncan Stroik
  • October 20, 2013: An Encounter with Saint Katharine Drexel, the Millionaire Nun with Cherie Hughes
  • November 13, 2013: Concert by the Cathedral Choir featuring an Orchestra, sponsored by
    Wilford and Sarah Maldonado in Honor of the Holy Family School Class of ’51
  • January 5, 2014: 20th Anniversary of the Episcopal Ordination of Most Reverend Edward J. Slattery
  • April 5, 2014: Immortality Set to Music: Concert by the Tulsa Oratorio Chorus
  • April 27, 2014: Centennial Carnivale: an outdoor carnival period-accurate to 1914
  • May 3, 2014: Centennial Gala at the Hyatt Regency Hotel
  • May 4, 2014: Centennial Mass celebrated by Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, Archbishop Emeritus Eusebius J. Beltran and Bishop Edward J. Slattery. Archbishop Beltran will be the Homilist.

There will be a Photo Exhibit in the Heiring Auditorium in the Cathedral Basement. The exhibit will change every month to feature a new decade.

 

 

stroik_duncan_webThe event on September 22, 2013 features a presentation at 1:30 p.m. by Professor Duncan G. Stroik, Professor at the School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame. Prof. Stroik is the editor of Sacred Architecture magazine. He works with Professor Thomas Gordon Smith who provided the design work that led to Holy Family Cathedral’s restoration.

Following the presentation, Mike Malcom and Father Matt La Chance will give tours of the Cathedral.

 

Mother Katharine DrexelOn October 20, 2013, Mrs. Cherie Hughes, author of a book about Saint Katharine Drexel, will present An Encounter with Saint Katharine Drexel, The Millionaire Nun. An heiress to a banking fortune, Mother Drexel entered religious life and used her fortune to found sixty-three Catholic schools – one of which is the school now known as Holy Family Cathedral School.

The event begins with a Reception at 1:00 p.m. The main presentation begins at 2:00 p.m. and concludes with a question and answer session.

nealtransparencyOur talented Cathedral Choir will give a concert on November 13 at 7:00 p.m. Choirmaster and Organist Ernest Neal will showcase the considerable talents of our choir performing a number of time-tested classic pieces that parishioners have often heard in our Cathedral’s hundred years. They will be backed by additional orchestral musicians.

Bishop Slattery Pope John Paul II apostolic successionMost Reverend Edward J. Slattery will be honored at receptions on January 5, 2014 on the 20th Anniversary of his Episcopal Ordination. These receptions follow the 10:00 a.m. and Noon Masses on Epiphany Sunday.

Bishop Slattery was ordained a bishop by Pope John Paul II on Epiphany Sunday in 1994. The ordination took place in Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Bishop Slattery was installed as the third bishop of the Diocese of Tulsa a few days later.

 

 

The Tulsa Oratorio Chorus will make a stop at the Cathedral on April 5, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. to give a performance entitled Immortality Set to Music. The concert at Holy Family Cathedral is the TOC’s third in the 2013-2014 season. Season tickets are available on the TOC website.

 

 

old carnival photoThe Centennial Carnivale is an outdoor period-accurate event featuring:

  • Old-fashioned carnival games
  • Horse and buggy rides
  • Coneys, popcorn, cotton candy, etc…
  • Cake walk
  • Youth entertainment/performances
  • Strolling fiddlers/jugglers/musicians

Adult meal $4, Child meal $3; Refreshments $1-$2, Rides & Games $1-$3
April 27, 2014  11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

 

The final two events mark the event – the 100th Anniversary of the Dedication of Holy Family.

Centennial Gala: On May 3, 2014, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, the Cathedral will host a Gala Dinner with many dignitaries, a viewing of a short documentary movie on the history of the Cathedral, and ballroom dancing. More information is here.

Centennial Mass: On Sunday, May 4, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. in the Cathedral, the parish will attend Mass celebrated by Most Reverend Paul S. Coakley, Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. Both Most Reverend Eusebius J. Beltran, Archbishop Emeritus of Oklahoma City, and Most Reverend Edward J. Slattery, Bishop of Tulsa, and many priests of the diocese will concelebrate. Archbishop Beltran will give the homily.
