The Rector’s Report: December 2013

Dear parishioners of Holy Family Cathedral,

IMGP2299I must thank our Cathedral Choir for giving us an excellent concert in November. It was part of the parish’s Centennial Celebration. It is obvious to me that each member of the choir loves the gift of sacred music. I am glad they share that gift with us every Sunday too.

Two years ago – in Advent of 2011 – we began using the new translation of the Mass. The Church’s goal in giving us these new words is to deepen our understanding of the sacred mysteries of the Mass, and therefore, the mysteries of the Coming of the Lord, His time with us on earth, His Passion and His Resurrection. We have done well learning the new words. I think that it has been spiritually beneficial as well.

Advent is one of our most active seasons of almsgiving. We just completed our annual Turkey Drive in which you gave Thanksgiving meals to 187 families that otherwise would have done without. On their behalf I thank you. As I write this, we are in the midst of our annual Coats & Blankets Drive. I always look forward to seeing heaping piles of coats in the back of the Cathedral.

I am grateful that you have responded to my plea for increasing your Sunday giving. Our Cathedral Parish is always generous to our numerous second collections. I thank you for supporting our first collection.

May your Advent be holy and blessed. May be all use this time to prepare ourselves to meet the Incarnate Word of God.

Sincerely in the Holy Family,

Msgr. Gregory A. Gier
