Parish Celebration: Msgr. Gier’s 17th Year as Rector of the Cathedral

On August 31, 1997, Father Gregory Gier was installed as the Rector of the Cathedral. Seventeen years later – August 31, 2014 – the parish held a special Reception to honor him.

The reception began with delicious food catered by the Cathedral Women’s Club. Bishop Edward Slattery and Father Louis Obirieze spoke about Monsignor Gier. Holy Family Cathedral School Choir performed a number of pieces in honor of the Rector. Current Principal Leslie Southerland and past Principal Jay Luetkemeyer thanked Monsignor Gier for his strong support of Holy Family Cathedral School. The crowd of nearly 400 enjoyed stories from each one of our deacons: Deacon Jerry Mattox, Tom Gorman, Kevin Sartorius, Greg Stice, and Kevin Tulipana.
Monsignor Gier received a number of gifts, including an icon of the Holy Family of Nazareth, a new computer, a scrapbook containing photos of him ministering to his parishioners these last seventeen years.

All guests received a copy of a tribute booklet, containing essays written by a number of people who know Monsignor Gier in various ways. The authors are Bishop Edward Slattery, Archbishop Eusebius Beltran (former bishop of Tulsa), Jeff & Cris Cox, Mary Jo Dixon, Bill & Cherie Hughes, Kay Keith, Mike Malcom, Judy Smith, Trish Spoerl, and Bob Thompson. The booklet concluded with a poem by Martin Reidy.
