2014 Turkey Drive begins

In 2001, Mr. Tom Gorman was trying to discern if God was calling him to the diaconate. He had no doubt that God was calling him to feed the hungry. Tom approached the parish Knights of Columbus to see if they would help him collect turkeys and hams to donate to Catholic Charities.

The Knights agreed to help. Tom brought a freezer to the Cathedral basement and watched as parishioners filled it many times with turkeys. The parish Youth Group volunteered to load the turkeys into trucks and vans, drive to Catholic Charities, and fill their freezers.

Now a deacon, Deacon Tom continues to oversee this program. The Turkey Drive begins on November 1 and ends on November 23. If you wish to donate a turkey or ham, you will find a freezer in the Cathedral basement outside the Chapel.

Every year, a number of families in need contact the parish asking for help with food. The Turkey Drive program has grown to include home deliveries of complete Thanksgiving meals: turkeys, potatoes, bread, other vegetables, and sometimes a pie. In recent years, parish teenagers and their parents delivered the meals after they delivered the majority of the turkeys to Catholic Charities. This year, the Cathedral Choir has volunteered to make the deliveries.

Catholic Charities has given us an additional opportunity: if you would rather give a sack of potatoes, they are hoping to collect 600 pounds of potatoes from the Cathedral parish. They are challenging a number of Tulsa parishes to donate all the components of a Thanksgiving dinner. They hope to copy on a larger scale Holy Family’s distribution of complete dinners.
