Who is Saint Maria Goretti?

Saint Maria Goretti is well known for her chastity and her willingness to forgive. After fending off the unwanted advances of a neighbor, he stabbed her leaving her mortally wounded. Before she died, she told her parish priest that she forgave her attacker and that she wanted him with her in heaven forever.

The Year of Mercy

Pope Francis declared 2016 will be a Year of Mercy. Maria Goretti’s desire to forgive makes her an excellent role model for us in this Year of Mercy.

As we prepare for the Year of Mercy to begin, Holy Family Cathedral’s front doors will be sealed shut from September until Bishop Slattery opens them at a Mass on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8. The opening of the doors symbolizes the outpouring of God’s mercy and grace.
