When are the holy doors open? How do I get an indulgence?

During this Year of Mercy, Pope Francis wishes for all of us to experience God’s mercy. Pope Francis wants each of us to have a “moment of encounter with the mercy of God” through an indulgence.

Pope Francis public domain imageI wish that the Jubilee Indulgence may reach each one as a genuine experience of God’s mercy, which comes to meet each person in the Face of the Father who welcomes and forgives, forgetting completely the sin committed. To experience and obtain the Indulgence, the faithful are called to make a brief pilgrimage to the Holy Door, open in every Cathedral.

ACCORDING TO WHICH AN INDULGENCE IS GRANTED TO THE FAITHFUL ON THE OCCASION OF THE EXTRAORDINARY JUBILEE OF MERCY

What are Indulgences?

“An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints.” Catechism of the Catholic Church 1471

Put simply, an indulgence is when God frees someone from punishment due to sin. The Diocese of Tulsa has published an excellent resource on indulgences.

What do I need to do to gain an Indulgence?
  • Make a pilgrimage to Holy Family Cathedral, or any other church designated by a bishop. Crossing through a Holy Door is a spiritual journey that signals, as the Holy Father said, “the deep desire for true conversion.”

    • The holy doors will be open at the following times:
      • Monday  11:20am -1:00pm
      • Saturday  3:30pm-6:30pm
      • Sunday  7:30am – 1:15 pm and 4:30 – 6:15 pm
  • Be baptized, not be excommunicated, and be in the state of grace, that is, be free of any mortal sins.

  • Be free of an attachment to sin, even venial sins.

  • Receive sacramental Confession and Communion within a two week period (a week before or up to a week after you walk through the doors)

  • Say some prayer for the intentions of Pope Francis. This can be as little as an Our Father and the Apostles’ Creed.

We attended midnight mass as guests on Christmas Eve 2015. We are Southern Baptist. I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity for my children to experience another faith. We felt very welcome and participated in all parts of the service including the offering.
