Welcome Bishop-elect David Konderla, fourth bishop of Tulsa

Bishop-elect David Konderla

Tulsa’s new bishop

This morning, the Holy Father Pope Francis accepted the retirement of Most Reverend Edward J. Slattery, third bishop of Tulsa. The Pope appointed Father David Konderla from the Diocese of Austin as the new bishop of the Diocese of Tulsa. Bishop-elect Konderla will be ordained and installed on June 29, 2016 at a large venue in Tulsa so that everyone may attend.

Very Reverend Jovita C. Okonkwo, Rector of the Cathedral, and the priests, deacons, staff and parishioners of Holy Family welcome our new shepherd and eagerly await his permanent arrival in Tulsa. Father Okonkwo said, “I am thrilled at the Holy Father’s announcement. I am looking forward to receiving him at the Cathedral. On behalf of all the priests of the Diocese of Tulsa, I express my gratitude to Bishop Slattery for his many years of service and the support he has given me as his Cathedral Rector. Let us pray in thanksgiving to God for His gift of these two holy men.”

He was appointed as the first full-time vocation director for the Diocese of Austin in 2001, a position he held until 2005, when he was appointed pastor of St. Mary Catholic Center in College Station. He has served almost 15 years of the 21 years he has been ordained with his beloved Aggies.

Over the years Father Konderla has served on the College of Consultors, the Presbyteral Council, the Priests’ Personnel Board, the Pension Plan and Trust Board, as the director of the Project Rachel retreats and as a chaplain for the Courage Apostolate at Texas A&M University.

  5. Linsey Oates says:

I’m a member of St. Anthony’s parish in Bryan and someone Father David knows only by face as someone with whom he prayed on the sidewalk in front of the now-closed Planned Parenthood clinic, just one among the unnamed many who have been touched and inspired by his ministry who are delighted that he has now been called to serve in Tulsa. Congratulations to Bishop-Elect Konderla and also to the Diocese, and blessings to all!

    To the Diocese of Tulsa,
I congratulate the Tulsa Diocese with your new Bishop.

Fr David is a tremendous Pastor, Priest and Confessor.

Fr Sis (now Bishop of San Angelo) and Fr David have been instrumental in building the Catholic student community here at St Mary’s and Texas A&M. St Mary’s is known for the many priest’s and nun’s that have come from these devoted students.
We truly hate to lose him, but knowing his ministry will be a blessing to you, we pray for his continued evangelization of all that he meets.

I am sure there will be a few Aggies in the diocese that will offer a “Whoop” in his honor.
