Notes from the Knightstand: December 2013

by Martin Reidy   I sat down to eat my turkey This late Thanksgiving Day When I heard upon the roof Dear old Santa’s sleigh! I rushed outside to tell him (In a manner quite abrupt) “Christmas is a month away – You have your dates mixed up!” But with a wistful smile Santa said : “Alas! The December days of Christmas Are in the distant past! “Christmas now comes early- Just after Halloween! Thanksgiving’s now an afterthought Squeezed midway in between!” Indeed, he may be right – And Thanksgiving may be lost! Such is … Read entire article »

Notes from the Knightstand: Musings while snoozing

by Martin Reidy   The summer’s not so hot As the year before ‘ And for that l thank my God with my knees upon the floor! “Dear God: I can take the 90s A hundred now and-then; But, lo and how I suffer when it hits a hundred and ten.” We pulled up the drawbridge after the last pancake breakfast in May , put out the “No Visitors” and ”Go Away” signs in the moat and settled into … Read entire article »

Notes from the Knightstand: Summer 2013

by Martin Reidy The drouqht’s not over yet- tho we ‘ve had a little rain- we raise our grateful voices in a joyous paen! “Dear Lord, for what You sent we thank you very much!” To which God replied I’ll send to you some more if you keep in touch!” So, let’s pray in supplication for rain upon our turf to bring forth the fruit and flowers and His abundance upon the earth! All in all the Council has had a very successful winter-spring as to our parish and community endeavors. Standout among these accomplishments are Mardi Gras, the annual garage sale – though the ladies of the Women’s Club are due accolades for doing a preponderance of the labors, the Friday Night Lenten Movie – a new project initiated by Paul Louderback, and the Council‘s monthly dinner at the Day Center for the … Read entire article »

We wish him well and blessings for with what he must cope as to this man called Francis we bring our yearning hope! They say he rides the bus and cooks his daily fare eschews the cross of gold for one of Christ laid bare! At first he is a puzzle- so much like our Christ and as you recall He also paid a price! For humility is a … Read entire article »

by Martin Reidy Now there comes upon us another chance to dream that all your hopes and promises will happen as foreseen! So we wish you well and hope they all come true as we say, “Happy New Year!” to each and everyone of you.   WELCOME TO 2013! Traditionally, a multi-storied building had no “13th floor” designation to avoid bad luck associated therein as was the a “fir tree topping” was done for the favor of the gods but those myths and legends are for another time, another column, Rather, like Janus – that double faced Roman god of doors, entries, exits, and Porter of Heaven (he released the sun each morning and locked it away at night as he alone possessed the key to the gate of heaven!) let us glance back into 2012 and forward into 2013 … Read entire article »

Notes from the Knightstand: December 2012

by Martin Reidy I sought my Lord on Christmas Day in a stable where He lay. I heard He had the Gift of Peace to fill each heart with Grace increased Inside I found a naked Child broken, hungry, much defiled. “Where is my Lord?” I dared to ask- much perplexed by this masque. The Child glanced up. He began to speak: “I am the One you came to seek. “You thought to find a royal prince arrayed in gold and frankincense. “Yet you passed Me by on … Read entire article »
