Would you like to help your child enjoy a deeper relationship with God? Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori based approach to religious formation of children (ages 3-9 at HFC) rooted in Sacred Scripture, Liturgy and respect for the child’s rich relationship with God. The children pray and work with materials in a space called the Atrium. In the ancient church, the atrium was a gathering space between the Church Proper and the street. It was the place where the catechumens, those preparing for initiation to the Church, would receive instruction. The Atrium has a similar purpose for our children, as it is a place to help them enter into full, conscious and active participation in the liturgical and communal life of the Church.

Holy Family Cathedral's Restored Order Sacramental Preparation Program allows parents to form their children in the faith at home and on their own timeline. “Restored Order” simply means that we celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation in the order in which God designed them to be given — Baptism, Confirmation, First Eucharist. It also restores the practice of administering the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist when children reach the age of reason. The primary intention is to empower our young people to live as disciples in today’s challenging society and give them the grace at an earlier age to become saints in our increasingly secular world.
Some may wonder how we can expect children to make an adult commitment to the Church at such a young age. Contrary to a widespread misperception, Confirmation is not the sacrament of adult commitment to the faith. It is a cause of spiritual maturity, not recognition of physical maturity. As the Catechism says, “Although confirmation is sometimes called the ‘sacrament of Christian maturity,’ we must not confuse adult faith with the adult age of natural growth, nor forget that the baptismal grace is a grace of free, unmerited election and does not need ‘ratification’ to become effective.” Confirmation assists those who receive it to grow in Christian maturity.
By restoring the order of the sacraments, we underscore the fact that the Holy Eucharist — not Confirmation — is the culmination of Christian initiation. This restoration also helps remind the faithful that the six other sacraments are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it.
Any baptized child in first grade or above is able to begin this process.
Registration for sacramental preparation is closed for this 2023-2024 year. We will open registration in June 2024.

Cathedral Families is a ministry for all married couples and families to grow in fellowship, faith, and evangelization. We meet for casual, large-group gatherings that foster community within the parish family. For deeper friendships, intentional growth as disciples, and encouragement in our daily faith walks, we meet in small groups for men and women. Additionally, the Cathedral Families ministry fosters opportunities to integrate with the other enlivening activities of our parish.
